This white paper synthesizes findings from a comprehensive study conducted for the Tanzania Women Chamber of Commerce (TWCC), focusing on identifying and overcoming barriers faced by women entrepreneurs in the food processing sub-sector of the manufacturing industry. Given the critical role of women in this sector and the alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, and 17, this study employs a mixed-methods approach to offer actionable insights and recommendations.
Introduction
The Tanzanian manufacturing sector, with a significant contribution from the food processing sub-sector, represents a vital component of the economy. Women entrepreneurs, constituting a substantial workforce within this arena, encounter multifaceted barriers that hinder their growth and sustainability. This white paper aims to shed light on these challenges and propose targeted interventions to support these entrepreneurs effectively.
Background
Despite the growth in Tanzania's manufacturing sector and its substantial contribution to
the GDP, women entrepreneurs face systemic barriers. These include financial limitations, social and cultural constraints, inadequate market access and networking opportunities, lack of skills and training, and legal and regulatory hurdles.
Methodology
The study utilized both quantitative and qualitative research methods, incorporating literature reviews and case studies to explore the barriers extensively and formulate recommendations.
Findings and Recommendations
Financial Barriers
Recommendation: Partner with financial institutions to simplify loan application processes and advocate for more accessible financial products tailored to women entrepreneurs.
Social and Cultural Barriers
Recommendation: Launch awareness campaigns focusing on women's rights, including property and inheritance rights, and foster a supportive community for women in business.
Market Access and Networking
Recommendation: Facilitate travel subsidies for women to attend relevant events, and organize local networking events to boost market access.
Skills and Training
Recommendation: Develop and disseminate resources and conduct workshops on business management, financial literacy, and legal awareness.
Legal and Regulatory Barriers
Recommendation: Advocate for policy reforms to eliminate gender-biased legal and regulatory practices affecting women entrepreneurs.
Impact Measurement
The implementation and impact of these recommendations can be evaluated against specific SDG targets and indicators, ensuring alignment with broader developmental goals.
Conclusion
The collaborative efforts between TWCC, government agencies, financial institutions, and the community are pivotal in creating an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs in Tanzania's food processing sector. By addressing the identified barriers, there is potential for substantial economic growth, gender equality, and sustainable development.
